At Fetal & Fertility Health, we perform male fertility tests to let you know your current fertility status. Semen analysis is the most useful test for men to check the semen parameters, but we can also perform hormone blood tests and genetic testing where required.
Semen Analysis (Sperm Test)
What is Semen Analysis?
Semen Analysis, or sperm test, is the most useful male fertility test as it measures the amount of semen that is produced as well as the quantity and quality of sperm in the sample.
The semen is tested for:
- Volume: how much semen is present in one ejaculation.
- Sperm count: the number of sperm present per millilitre of semen in one ejaculation.
- Sperm morphology: the percentage of sperm that have a normal shape.
- Sperm motility: the percentage of sperm that can move forward normally.
- Antisperm antibodies
- We also determine which type of fertility treatment would be best, should you need it.
Getting your Sperm Tested
Semen analysis is available at our centre by appointment and will be processed by our andrologist. The semen analysis facility is organised for weekends (generally a Saturday) to avoid loss of work days.
Prior to giving a sample, the male partner must abstain from ejaculation for 2 – 5 days. The semen sample is produced at home by ejaculation into a clean sample container and brought in within 90 minutes of sample production at the designated appointment time.
Instructions for Producing your Sample for Testing
- Abstain from ejaculation for a minimum of 48 hours prior to producing the sample for testing, but not longer than 5 days.
- Produce the semen sample into a clean sterile pot by masturbation. The pot may be obtained from your doctor, our office or they can be purchased from a pharmacy.
- Ensure that ALL the sample is collected into the pot. If part of the sample spills, please notify staff.
- Produce the sample within 90 minutes of your appointment and deliver it directly to the clinic for testing.
- Keep the sample warm during transportation to the clinic by placing the pot containing your sample in your trousers or jacket pocket.
- Clearly label the pot with your name and date of birth.

Hormone Bloods
If significant abnormalities are found during the semen analysis, the following tests may be required for further evaluation of the male partner:
- FSH, LH & Prolactin
- Testosterone
Genetic Testing
Genetic testing may be required in men with very low sperm counts or no sperm in their semen. This may include:
- A general screen or karyotype
- Screening for the Cystic Fibrosis gene
- Screening for Y-chromosome deletions
